Poets write with a purpose. Our literary heritage has so much to teach us. Here is an opportunity to identify multiple themes explored by Shakespeare and look at ways a poetry text may draw on those themes and demonstrate a different approach to the theme. In particular, there is an example of using allusions to the play, Macbeth, can add layers of meaning to a poem and reinforce the themes, as well as critique our modern society. Many poems can evoke thoughts on more than one theme. I have listed possible poems and their themes that are found in many of Shakespeare’s texts. You may like to use these poems in conjunction with other texts that explore similar themes.
